Do you need to plan for your long-term care needs?

When you are older and in need of care, do you know what you'll want to see happen? If you want to plan for needing support as you age, then you'll want to talk to your attorney about your estate plan having long-term care planning documents included.

Long-term care planning is something everyone should do. It gives you an opportunity to decide on how you'll be cared for as you age and even how to set up funds to cover the cost of that care.

What is long-term care?

Long-term care refers to the need for someone else taking care of you in some way. That might be help with any of the following tasks:

  • Providing meals
  • Shopping or running errands
  • Using the bathroom
  • Bathing
  • Getting dressed
  • Helping you with your medications
  • Answering the phone
  • Helping clean and manage the household
  • Meeting doctors' appointments

Long-term care is not always needed forever. It can refer to temporary long-term care, like rehabilitation from a hospital stay that takes a few weeks or months, to ongoing care for a severe medical condition, dementia or other health concerns.

When you choose long-term care, you should consider both custodial care and skilled care. Custodial care can be performed by anyone. Skilled care can only be performed by those who are trained, such as licensed medical professionals.

As you think about your long-term care and come up with a plan, your attorney can help you put it down on paper in your long-term care plan. That way, there will be no question about your wishes.
